A leading British haulier, Notts based B Taylor & Sons, has today flown in the face of recession by opening a new £3m headquarters and Freight Centre in Huthwaite, Sutton in Ashfield. The three acre centre extends the company’s depot count to six – five in the UK and one in the Netherlands.
Opened by Geoff Hoon MP, Secretary of State for Transport, the new facility provides the Taylor Group with the capacity increases and efficiency improvements required to more easily handle the rapid growth of Taylors Transport International Limited in recent years. In addition, it will act as the springboard to further growth on the run up to and when the upturn comes.
 Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon said:
’I am delighted to open the new Huthwaite Freight Centre in Sutton. The increased efficiency that the centre will offer B. Taylor and Sons is exactly the sort of approach that the Department for Transport encourages the haulage industry to take. Our Freight Best Practice programme and Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving training initiatives are helping companies to cut costs as well as reduce their emissions and improve safety.’
The Huthwaite Freight Centre includes hard standing and warehousing, the latter designed to facilitate the ‘flow through’ of loads – to speed the onward dispatch of cargo, including pallets distributed through the Fortec network and hazardous goods through the Hazchem Network.
Features on the new site include a state of the art fuel dispensing and monitoring system plus a drive through truck wash that uses recycled water. An acoustic sound barrier has been installed around the hard standing to minimise any noise nuisance to local residents.
The Huthwaite Freight Centre replaces a now outgrown depot just three miles away. However, it is being retained as a service and maintenance centre for the company’s extensive and still growing fleet which includes sloping roof trailers to improve fuel usage. In addition, some trucks are currently undergoing in service evaluation using low emission bio fuels. All trucks are fitted with gps tracking.
Speaking at the opening, Alan Taylor, Managing Director of the Taylor Group, said: ‘It would have been only too easy to put this expansion on the back burner. However, we knew that our existing facilities were stretched and that to invest now was vital both to maintaining our current competitive edge and to our future success. Hence, the Huthwaite Freight Centre is no longer a pipe dream
’It is located alongside the UK motorway network (just two miles from the M1 Junc 28); it provides a new foundation from which the company can continue to grow. In addition, it offers both the prospect of continued job security to the 250 employed across the group and the opportunity of further job opportunities as the recession lifts.’ Â
Stena Line Freight Commercial Manager Frank Nieuwenhuys congratulated Taylors International on the opening of the new Freight Centre.
”We are delighted to see the continued growth of Taylors International and believe that this has been made possible by the organisation’s continued efficiency, unrivalled customer service and excellent attention to detail.  It is a positive sign to see such growth, especially in the current economic climate, but that can only be a testament to the hard work and dedication of the staff. Stena Line would like to wish Taylors International all the very best for the future and for its further growth.”
